Domestic abuse
Domestic abuse occurs when an individual suffers physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse by a current partner, previous partner, or an adult family member.
It can include violence perpetrated by a son, daughter or any other person who has a close or blood relationship with the victim/survivor.
Sufferers may experience a combination of abusive behaviour, for example:
- physical violence;
- verbal threats and put downs;
- psychological and emotional abuse such as isolation from loved ones or humiliation;
- sexual violence such as rape;
- financial control such as withholding money.
Both men and women may suffer domestic abuse. It's important to remember that it's not your fault; its the abuser who has the problem - not you.
