Swansea Songs

Quirky portraits created by Swansea's young carers are brightening up the city centre.

Swansea Songs celebrates the lives of young carers through a series of quirky portraits set alongside song lyrics that reflect the individual characters of the young people represented.

A young carer is a child or young person whose life is affected by looking after someone with a disability or a long-term illness, often taking on responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.

The Swansea Songs project is facilitated by artist, Soozy Roberts, and has given the young people from the YMCA Young Carers Service an opportunity to have fun and be creative, providing valuable respite.

"Music has the power to inspire us, to move us and to make us feel more connected. I hope these bright and colourful photos and songs will speak to passers-by in some way and give a little joy or hope. During the pandemic the effects on young people and young carers in particular have been enormous. I can't wait until we can properly meet and support young people again in person - it's so vital to their wellbeing." - Soozy Roberts

The funky photographs are presented in the city centre alongside popular song lyrics set against bright, bold colours as part of Swansea Council's Central Arts Programme.

You can see the young carers' portraits, together with accompanying song lyrics, on the hoardings surrounding Swansea's £135m Copr Bay regeneration scheme, close to the Iceland store.
