Thousands of potholes filled to keep traffic on the move

Since the start of the year 3,500 potholes have been fixed and more than 200,000 sqm of road surfaces on main roads and side streets in Swansea have been upgraded as part of major improvement works.

And in the last month alone around 30,000 sqm of skid-resistant road resurfacing has been carried out on more than a dozen roads in the countdown to the winter months.

Roads include Trewyddfa Road in Morriston, Ystrad Road in Fforestfach and Bohun Street in Manselton.

Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment Enhancement and Infrastructure Management, said: "Despite the pandemic, our highways teams have been very extremely busy throughout 2021 filling in thousands of potholes, 99% of them within 48 hours of being reported.

"We've also resurfaced miles of road across Swansea and, thanks to the popular PATCH project, we've visited wards across the city carrying out 22,500 sqm of valuable road maintenance improvements at the request of ward members and members of the public. Every ward will have been visited by the end of March next year.

"Further highway improvements such as complete resurfacing schemes were also carried out earlier in the year with a number of roads in the Townhill community completely resurfaced."

The latest work comes in the countdown to the winter period where the impact of freezing and thawing roads and heavy traffic can cause problems and further potholes.

Cllr Thomas said: "We aim to do all we can to make our roads as resilient as possible during the winter months which is why we've put in so much effort over recent weeks.

"But it is a never-ending task and we'd urge residents to continue to let us know when they spot potholes so our teams can fix them as quickly as possible."

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the council still aims to fill in potholes within 48 hours of them being reported. Residents can report them here - www.swansea.gov.uk/reportpothole - and get progress updates if they include their email address in their report.
