YOUNGSTERS in five Swansea communities can look forward to enjoying new and upgraded play areas in the coming months.

Work is starting this month on five great new play areas at the Phoenix Centre in Townhill as well as in Plasmarl, Gendros, Pontlliw and Clydach.

And plans for 10 more are expected to be agreed over the coming months to bring to more than 60 the number of completed schemes under a hugely-popular programme that's benefited communities across Swansea.

Swings, carousels, climbing frames and multiplay units are all going to be features of the five new play areas where work is starting later this month, part of the council's ongoing £7m campaign to get children playing in their neighbourhoods.

Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: "Since the end of the pandemic we've installed almost 50 new play areas or upgrades in neighbourhoods all across the city.

"Chiildren have been thrilled by what they find and parents have been clamouring for more. That's why 15 new play areas are being scheduled for this year. So we're very optimistic that they'll love what they see when the building is done.

"Apart from the five due to start this month, we're also in advanced planning for upgrades at Brynmill Park, Blaenymaes Playground, Cwm Level in Brynhyfryd and the DFS play area in Morriston."

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: "We made our play areas pledge a policy commitment because we saw just how important they were to young families and children as a free place to go as we all emerged from the pandemic.

"We wanted to continue to encourage opportunities to get out and about and from my visits to see the sites, it's very clear the feedback has been enormously positive."

Since the start of the play areas programme communities across Swansea have seen investment in areas including Mayhill, West Cross, Garnswllt, Bonymaen, Mawr, Grovesend, Penclawdd and Birchgrove.
