Morriston blast Community Support Point opens at local library

Swansea Council staff will be on hand to provide more support over the coming weeks for those affected by the blast.

The community support point based at Morriston Library opens on March 22 and support and advice will be available six days a week. Staff from various Council departments and a range of specialist service providers will be on hand to offer support, advice and information to residents.

Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council, said: 'We recognise the impact the incident has had on the community of Morriston, especially those residents directly affected by the gas explosion.

"We want to ensure everyone has the support they need to help with the process of recovery. That's why the council, along with the SCVS, members of the community and other partners have been providing support at the Memorial Hall and the Dingle.

"Now, any local residents who are concerned or affected by this incident can drop by the Community Support Point at the library for a chat and to discuss what we can do to help."

The purpose of the Community Support Point is to listen to local people, find out what they need and put in place the support to help them. This can include advice and guidance on various subjects about where to seek financial support, as well as wellbeing support and any other services that may help individuals and families affected.

Amanda Carr, Director of Swansea Council for Voluntary Service (SCVS) who are running the fundraising appeal for those who have been affected said "The incident in Morriston last week has had a huge effect on the local community.

"It's been so heartening to see people coming forward with offers of support, and donations to the appeal.

"Impact payments from the appeal will start to be paid out in the next few days to households that have been identified as most affected. Further discretionary payments are being made in the next few weeks.

"We're delighted that the community support point is being opened as a place that people can go to share their concerns, and we look forward to helping with any sessions that the community needs."

Cllr Stewart said: 'We will also be working with local organisations and groups who have already come forward to offer their support, to enable the people of Morriston to come together and help their community.  Once we learn how to support the needs of the community, we can provide more information about what will be put in place to support people."

Anybody who wishes to discuss their needs or offer any form of assistance to the local community can visit Morriston Library between 9am and 6pm, Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm Saturdays at 13A Pentrepoeth Rd, Morriston, Swansea SA6 6AA.
