Pupils celebrate city's diversity

More than 100 pupils and teachers from 25 different schools in Swansea attended a conference at the Swansea.com stadium on Friday to celebrate the city's rich cultural and religious diversity.

The event, which was the first of its kind in Swansea, also saw Welsh Education Minister Jeremy Miles attend.

Aimed at promoting tolerance and supporting inclusivity for people of all races, cultures and religions, pupils attending took part in exercises and workshops throughout the day.

They will now return to their schools where they will be supported to become ambassadors for diversity and inclusivity as schools play their part in helping to achieve the Welsh Government's pledge of an anti-racist Wales.

The conference also comes in the same week that a pocket-guide was launched as Swansea moves towards becoming a Human Rights City.

Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Education Robert Smith said: "I'd like to congratulate those behind organising this event and I'm pleased that it was supported by so many of our schools".

"There are almost 150 different languages spoken in Swansea and it is important our young people embrace and celebrate this diversity in our schools.

"I'm sure the day will have inspired and supported both pupils and teachers."

Jeremy Miles said: "Our new Curriculum for Wales is being taught in schools across Wales from this term and will support learners to become ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world.

"It was great to meet the pupils in Swansea today who are going to be fantastic ambassadors for respect and harmony in their schools."
