The council's hugely-popular play areas project is to get a £2m boost so even more neighbourhoods can benefit from a scheme that's already seen more than 40 childrens' recreation spaces upgraded.

And residents can also expect to see £5m being invested in roads directly which will also have a share of a £7.8m pot that's been set aside for highways and maintenance improvements for schools and other council-operated buildings.

The spending was outlined in two reports approved by Cabinet on February 16, setting out plans for capital spending by the council on major projects and council housing improvements over the next four years.

The proposals will now go to full council on March 2 for a final decision.

Work has just started on Mumbles sea defences, 71/72 Kingsway is set to be completed this year and planning permission has just been granted for the transformation of Castle Square Gardens so work can start later this year.

Rob Stewart, Leader of the Council, said: "Throughout the challenges of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, the council has been here for the people of Swansea.

"In the coming 12 months around £156m is set to be invested by the council in major projects and community initiatives alike. The capital spending programmes we've set out aim to ensure every community continues to be supported, jobs are protected and created and Swansea is in the best shape it can be for the years ahead."

The main Capital Budget report seen by Cabinet on February 16, identifed around £133m of capital spending on major projects in the coming year.

In addition to this, the council has recently secured levelling up funding of £18.8m for further improvements to the Lower Swansea Valley, including the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks.

The council's £5m play area improvement fund is being boosted to £7m with an extra £2m due to be added to the capital budget in the coming months.

A separate capital budget report about council housing lists almost £51m of spending, including more than £11m building new homes, £2.6m on new kitchens and bathrooms for tenants and £6.7m on environmental improvements - all of which will be paid for from Housing revenue contributions and grants and not from the council tax.
