Avian influenza (bird flu)

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed at a number of locations / wild bird colonies in Wales. Some of these locations are likely to lead to dead and/or sick birds being washed up on beaches which are used by the public.

Beach-goers in Swansea are being urged to report any dead or sick birds. It follows a number of dead birds with Avian Flu being found along the Welsh coast and other parts of the UK.

If you find any sick or injured wild birds (on public or private land), please contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

The greatest immediate risk is to other avian species - wild and captive. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says the risk from Avian Flu to humans is 'very low'.

A number of dead birds have been found on some Swansea beaches and beach-goers should not touch dead birds if they see any.

Dog walkers are being advised to keep their pets on leads and away from dead birds.

New wild dead birds may wash ashore and back out to sea with each tidal cycle but agencies will remove birds when resources allow.

If you find any dead birds on council land then call the contact centre number during office hours 01792 635600 and outside of office hours 01792 636595.

Dead birds on private land should be reported to DEFRA on 03459 33 55 77 or see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/report-dead-wild-birds

Don't risk spreading bird flu

  • Do not touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings
  • If you keep poultry or other birds, wash your hands, clean and disinfect your footwear before tending to your birds
  • If you find any dead wild birds, please report online www.gov.uk/guidance/report-dead-wild-birds or call the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77

APHA may collect some dead birds for surveillance testing. Otherwise, birds can be disposed of safely, if necessary, by the local authority on public land or by the landowner/manager.
