Tabor Welsh Independent Church, Abergwynfi

Roll of Honour

Tabor was a Welsh Independent chapel situated on the junction of High Street and Chapel Street, Abergwynfi. A modestly-proportioned cement-rendered building, it had been built in 1879 and later rebuilt and modified as the congregation grew. By the outbreak of war in 1914 Abergwynfi was a relatively new village. Its close-knit community had grown up over the course of a generation following the development of coal mining in the Gwynfi Valley, up in the mountains to the east of Port Talbot.

By the summer of 2018 the chapel had closed and had been put up for sale, and the roll of honour was transferred, via a circuitous route, to West Glamorgan Archives.

The Roll of Honour has seen much better days: it has been badly damaged by damp over the years, but it has been subsequently repaired, and all the 51 names are legible. It takes the form of a bracketed tablet displaying the names, while two angels with trumpets fly above, holding a banner with the words "Blwyddyn 1919 Heddwch" ("Year 1919 Peace"). It is in ink and wash on paper and, judging by the precision of the drawing and calligraphy, is the work of a professional draftsman rather than an artist, although it is unsigned.
