Siloh Newydd Independent Church, Landore

Roll of Honour

Siloh Newydd is a large chapel situated on the corner of Siloh Road and Pentre Treharne Road in the Landore district of Swansea. The cause began in 1822 and the chapel we see today was built in 1878. At the outbreak of the First World War, the Lower Swansea Valley was dominated by smelting works that provided employment and prosperity to Landore. The chapel had a membership of several hundred then, many of whom worked in the works.

Siloh Newydd closed in 2016, but the following year the chapel building was transferred to a new congregation called Liberty Church who have restored it and continue to use it for worship.

Before being transferred to the Archive Service, the Roll of Honour used to hang in a frame near the main doors of the chapel. It is drawn in ink and watercolour on a piece of card that measures 55 x 76 cm, and it is signed TBR. It records the names of all the men who joined the armed forces, and the names of the six men who died in the war are marked with a cross.

After the war was over, the men who had fought were given gold watch fobs by the church in recognition of their service. This one (in private hands) was presented to Ernest Williams, whose name appears towards the end of the roll of honour.
