Hafod Brotherhood

Roll of Honour

Hafod Brotherhood was established shortly before the First World War. It was one of a number of local brotherhoods, which were effectively church clubs for young men. It was set up by Hafod United Methodist Church, which used to stand on the east side of Neath Road in Hafod, Swansea.

Hafod Brotherhood used to hold a regular series of meetings which featured musical performances and talks on moral and religious themes. In 1922, after the First World War, they formed Hafod Brotherhood Football Club, which competed in local leagues at amateur level.

The roll of honour held by the Archive Service is a mere shadow of the original document. It is a photocopy of a rather battered little card, measuring 8.5 x 14 cm, which appears to be a photograph of the original roll of honour that was probably on display at the Hafod Brotherhood headquarters. This was clearly a beautiful and well-designed piece of artwork and is signed B. and G. Taylor. The flags of the UK and its allies adorn the top, while a wreath of what looks like oak leaves surrounds the list of names of the 31 members of the Brotherhood who took part in the war. Two of the names are starred, indicating that they died in action.
