Christ Church, Swansea
Printed roll of honour
In September 1915, a little over a year after the outbreak of war, the Rev. J. H. Watkin Jones, vicar of Christ Church, put together a roll of honour of the names of the men from the parish who were serving in the war. This was not displayed, but printed as a booklet and circulated. It says that the church bell would be rung at 6pm every day to encourage people to pray for the men who were away at the front.
As it takes the form of a magazine, it is able to include more information than is possible on the framed rolls of honour. It lists all the men from the parish who had enlisted, arranged by their regiments. It also records their addresses. In total 460 names are listed. 17 of them had died by September 1915.
