Adulam Baptist Chapel, Bonymaen

Roll of Honour

Adulam was a Welsh Baptist chapel situated on the south side of Cefn Road, Bonymaen, with a graveyard adjoining. The congregation was formed in the 1840s. The chapel was built in 1850-51, enlarged in 1878 and renovated in 1963. The chapel closed on 19 July 2022 and the records, including the roll of honour, were transferred to the Archive Service in 2023.

The roll of honour measures 47 x 60.5 cm and was drawn by T. Lewis of Morriston in 1917. The 48 names of men engaged in active service are arranged in three columns on a representation of a scroll, fixed by the top edge and unrolling under its own weight, under a decorative title with the name of the chapel, a pasted-on cut-out of Lord Kitchener, beneath an array of flags, representing Belgium, Italy, France, Russia, Japan and Serbia, with the Union Flag in the centre. On a semi-circular banner above are the words "Gwell angeu na chywilydd" (Better death than shame). Around a green border is wound a ribbon decorated with the names of the various theatres of war, while up at the top, two Welsh dragons fill in the corners, with a representation of the ancient seal of Swansea Borough between them. The design is executed in ink and poster paint on a cardboard backing.
