Swansea Council Cabinet member for Care Services Louise Gibbard said: "It's great to be celebrating social work week.

"Social workers play such a vital role in our communities, supporting children, young people and adults at all stages of their life.

"I really want to show my appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our social workers and encourage anybody who's thinking about it to take up this vital role."

Swansea's Director of Social Services David Howes said: "Social workers and their colleagues across social services make me proud to be their director every single day.

"I am delighted that this year as part of the celebration of Social Work Week people are going to have an opportunity to hear from some of our fantastic social workers in video messages and hear a bit more about the diverse roles they undertake here in Swansea.

"Doing what matters is at the heart of what we do. That means Swansea Social Services works with children and families, trying to keep them safely with families, with and in their communities, and local to Swansea.

"If children do need to be looked after elsewhere and make sure that we remain focused on keeping them safely connected as best we can as we support them into adulthood.

"There is a huge range of work that we do with adults that need information, advice and support, working alongside them, whether that's adults who are experiencing mental health challenges or working with a fantastic population of individuals with learning difficulties and making sure they're supported to be as independent as they can be.

"As well as a whole range of work around supporting older people to remain as independent for as long as possible and where we do need to step in with alternative forms of care, making sure that those alternative forms of care the absolute best they can be. And at the heart of all of that work is our fantastic social worker workforce.

"Social work is a fantastic and broad career with its challenges but also opportunities and the reward of making a difference for our population and our communities. I hope this week will inspire people to learn more about this career and what working in Swansea could be like."

As part of the celebrations the Guildhall is being lit green in honour of social workers tonight (Monday, March 20).
