Lights out for Earth Hour
SWANSEA residents are being urged to support this weekend's spectacular Earth Hour lights-out event to celebrate the planet and the need to protect it.
On Saturday, March 26, at 8.30pm, Swansea Council's Guildhall and Civic Centre will join forces with millions of households and communities to show support for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) event.
Martin Nicholls, Swansea Council's director of place - and interim chief executive from this May, said he hoped residents would be part of this world-wide phenomenon.
He said: "We're proud to take part in Earth Hour again. The council is playing its part all year round by declaring a climate emergency, re-doubling our work to reduce our carbon footprint and aiming to make the council a net zero carbon organisation by 2030.
"We want to make the city net zero by 2050.
"The non-essential lights going out at our Civic Centre, the Guildhall, as well as homes across the city, sends a powerful message about just how much we all care about the environment in Swansea. That's why it has become such a special an important event here each year.
"We hope residents of all ages will join in in their own way whether its youngsters switching off their games consoles or families turning off the TV, or people going the whole way and turning all their lights out.
"It's important because it makes us think about our environment and how we all have a role in protecting our planet for generations to come."
Earth Hour's unique display of darkness has become a global phenomenon with hundreds of millions of individuals coming together each year.
