Frequently asked questions about CCTV

Find out answers to the most common questions we get asked about CCTV.

We are currently in the process of upgrading our CCTV systems around Swansea.

Who is responsible for CCTV cameras across the city?

The Council operate CCTV cameras in external locations across the city and county. The main system currently consists of 132 cameras throughout the local authority area, including in Morriston, Mumbles, Gorseinon and Pontarddulais. We also have additional cameras in council housing estates. All these cameras cover a defined area and are primarily used to deter crime and anti-social behaviour. The cameras can help the police identify offenders and collect evidence for a court prosecution.

There is a dedicated, restricted and secure control centre which is and operated in accordance with Home Office guidelines. Council CCTV operators have a direct link with the police and can feed images to the police control room when relevant, reporting incidents immediately. This communication works both ways, and the police may contact the council CCTV Control Room to request monitoring of an incident.

All Council CCTV operators have undergone formal training in the operation of CCTV. They operate according to the council's CCTV Code of Practice and the Surveillance Commissioner's Office Code of Practice.
