What the Kingsway used to look like
Gower Street and Mount Pleasant Baptist Chapel (photo ref. P/PR/21iii/3/1)
This photograph shows Gower Street, looking west. The road had some shops on it in the middle distance, while at the far end were the imposing villas of Picton Place. The lines of the tramway can be seen curving into the distance; they used to lead down St Helen's Road towards the western parts of the town.
The building on the right is Mount Pleasant Baptist Chapel, which was the only builidng in view to survive the Three Nights' Blitz in February 1941. The road was redeveloped as the Kingsway after the war.
