The burial grounds where the civilian war dead were buried
Where to find the cemeteries and their records
The purpose of this page is to help locate the graveyards where the civilian war dead are buried. We hold the burial registers for some of these at the Archive Service. If we do, there are copies of the relevant pages of the register to download.
It should be remembered that not all graves are marked with a headstone.
Most of the burials took place in municipal cemeteries. In Swansea, 74 were buried at Morriston Cemetery, 66 at Danygraig, 60 at Oystermouth and 21 at Cwmgelli. A further two were buried at Kingsbridge Cemetery in Gorseinon.
All these cemeteries are administered by Swansea Council's Burials and Cremations section, who also hold the registers. Further information about each ground, including location maps and information about how to find it, are on the Swansea Council website. Please note that there is a fee for register searches.
Three people, all members of the same family, were also buried at Llantwit Cemetery in Neath. All of Port Talbot's civilian war dead were buried in Goytre Cemetery, Port Talbot. Both these cemeteries are run by Neath Port Talbot Council and details about the cemeteries service can be found here on the Neath Port Talbot Council website.
Church and chapel burial grounds
Around a third of Swansea's civilian war dead were buried in church or chapel graveyards within the West Glamorgan area. Most of these burials took place either at St Peter's, Cockett (61) or at Bethel, Sketty (25).
Calfaria, Ravenhill (Baptist) Carmarthen Road, Fforestfach, SA5 4AD (Location map) NB the chapel has closed and much of the original building has been demolished. What remains is currently used as a nursery. 3 burials: see the burial register (PDF, 727 KB) (opens new window)
