YGG Tirdeunaw project

The council's band B Strategic Outline programme, which has been approved in principle by Welsh Government in December 2017 includes a new build primary school plus Flying Start for YGG Tirdeunaw.

This project is jointly funded by Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme and Swansea Council.

A statutory consultation process was undertaken in September 2018 on a proposal to increase the size of the school from 2 form entry (60 pupil admission number) to 2.5 Form Entry (75 pupil admission number). A review of Welsh-medium school catchment areas was included as part of the proposal.

No formal objections were received to the statutory notice and Swansea's Cabinet approved the proposal at their meeting on 21 March 2019.

Details of this can be found at:  and 17 October 2019: democracy.swansea.gov.uk

The project includes:

  • Provide a new school building for YGG Tirdeunaw on land at YGG Bryntawe.
  • Provide a fit for purpose, 21st century learning environment for YGG Tirdeunaw which will accommodate 525 full time pupils plus 75 nursery.
  • Provide an appropriate setting for the Flying Start provision which will relocate from its existing venue at the former Daniel James site.
  • Improve traffic arrangements at the new site at Heol Gwyrosydd and provide a new bus park for coaches serving both the primary and secondary school.
  • Increase the number of Welsh medium primary school places in the locality/Swansea.
  • Remove a condition category C building.
  • Reduce backlog maintenance.
  • Improve building efficiency.

Progress update - January 2022

On 14 September 2019 work started on the £11.5m new school building for YGG Tirdeunaw primary school and on 3 November 2021, earlier than the proposed completion date, the school opened its doors to staff and pupils.

Staff worked hard in preparing and setting up the classrooms and learning resource areas to ensure pupils quickly settled into their new surroundings.

The two storey contemporary school building was jointly funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government as part of the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme.

The new setting is less than a mile from its previous location but is now more centrally located for the majority of pupils attending. Attached to the school there is also a new Flying Start / Dechrau Deg provision which is a Welsh Government early years programme for families with children who are under 4 years of age.

The new classrooms are bright, colourful and designed to provide a creative space to inspire pupils to learn and develop, in addition there are areas inside and outside the school which can be made available for community use out of school hours.

The environmentally friendly construction has achieved a BREEAM excellent rating and the design incorporates a multifunctional sustainable and natural drainage design enhancing biodiversity. In line with Swansea Council's Net Zero 2030 initiative a number of electrical vehicle charging points (EVCP) have also been installed in the school car park.

Morgan Sindall worked safely during the pandemic to deliver the school, and as part of the wider community benefit also carried out improvements to the two community centres in Penlan.
