But with the deadline for applications just days away, anyone who still needs to apply is being asked to do so as quickly as possible.

The grant on offer via Swansea Council is aimed at hard-pressed local households trying to manage soaring fuel bills in the middle of a cost of living crisis.

So far more than 12,500 applications have been made and payments are going out as quickly as possible every day with £2.5m paid out in Swansea already. But the deadline for people to get their applications in for the Welsh Government grant is Monday, February 28.

Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council, said: "It's good news that so many people who are entitled to this payment have put in an application. But it's vital that anyone else who feels they might be eligible gets their bid in before Monday's deadline.

"At times when the cost of living essentials like food and fuel are rising fast, this extra £200 will assist many families and households to make ends meet."

The Welsh Government Winter Fuel Support is available to single people or couples who currently receive benefits such as Universal Credit, Income Support or Income-Related Employment and Support Allowance.

Residents getting any of these allowances should also consider applying for a Council Tax Reduction if they've not already done so. There is more information here: https://www.swansea.gov.uk/benefits
