Stray dogs

Dogs that are picked up are well looked after in kennels for a seven day period, after which time they may be re-homed.

If a stray dog is impounded a release fee (including any veterinary expenses) must be paid to the council. The dog will not be released and reunited with its owner until the fees have been paid in full.  There is no provision for payment by instalment. Payments should be made at the Civic Centre, Oystermouth Road. 

The release fee is £115.50 plus £19.50 for each day / part day spent in the kennels.

What do I do if my dog has gone missing?

If you have lost your dog and think it may have been picked up as a stray, please email pest.control@swansea.gov.uk.

What do I do if I have found a stray dog?

During office hours, telephone us on 01792 635600 and an animal warden will come and collect the dog from you where practicable.

Any dog found straying during or outside office hours can be taken to the council's acceptance point at the Security Office, Pipehouse Wharf, Morfa Road, Swansea, SA1 2EN or keep the dog until the next working day and contact us for collection. Collars and tags

It is an offence to allow any dog in a public place without a collar with the name and address of the owner attached. Offenders may be fined up to £500.

Re-homing dogs

Stray dogs we have collected may be available for re-homing if they are not collected by their owner within seven days. It is the council's policy not to re-home dogs in the same area where they were found straying. We charge £127 to rehome a stray dog.
