Blue Plaque to St. Helens - Swansea RFC

Location of plaque: On an external wall beside entrance to the clubhouse on Bryn Road.

The St. Helens ground, which first opened in 1873 has been the venue for some of the most memorable rugby victories in the game's history in Wales.

Swansea was the first club side to defeat Australia (1908), South Africa (1912) and New Zealand (1935). More recently Swansea RFC beat the (then) world champions Australia 21 - 6 in front of a crowd of 10,150 in 1992.

St. Helens was also the venue for the first home international in Wales, on 16^th December, 1882 against England. Wales lost 0 -10, and this was only the second meeting between the two sides.

This must be among the most attractive grounds in the UK on which rugby is played with its unique seafront location and a sandy beach a few dozen yards from the playing surface.
