More schools set to join sanctuary network

More schools in Swansea could be recognised for the work they do in creating a safe, inclusive and welcoming culture for all including asylum seekers and refugees.

Ten primary schools and three comprehensive schools in Swansea are already accredited Schools of Sanctuary, including three which gained the status in the last 12 months.

Now more schools across the city are being encouraged to join in the programme that aims to demonstrate they are committed to creating a safe and inclusive culture of welcome that benefits everybody, including anyone in their community seeking sanctuary and to share their values and activities with their local communities.

Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, Robert Smith, said:

"I'm very proud that in Swansea - Wales' first City of Sanctuary and first Human Rights City - we have a growing list of schools achieving Schools of Sanctuary accreditation.

"Our ambition is to continue to extend this network of schools so that pupils and their families feel the place where they learn has a safe and inclusive culture.

"Schools of Sanctuary also need to show that they help their students, staff and wider community learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary and the issues surrounding forced migration."
