Highways investment is ensuring thousands of potholes are fixed
THOUSANDS of potholes and hundreds of road repairs and upgrades are helping keep city traffic on the move backed by £8.1m of council funding.
Since April more than 4,200 potholes have been fixed alongside a number of major road resurfacing projects in communities across the city.
In October alone our team filled in 445 potholes, more than 95% of them within 48 hours of being reported by members of the public.
In addition to that more than 1,900 other road defects were identified by the council's road engineer team and fixed between April and September.
The latest work comes in the countdown to the winter period where the impact of freezing and thawing roads and heavy traffic can cause problems and further potholes.
Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure said: "The work is all part of our £8.1m commitment this year alone to maintaining and improving our highways, keeping businesses, visitors and residents on the move."
"Our highways maintenance teams have covered a lot of ground this year, working hard to target roads most in need of repair.
"On top of our pothole repair service our small resurfacing scheme has been working in communities around the city over the summer fixing larger road problems.
"Our highways team has also been in Blaenymaes, Loughor, Manselton, Gendros, Penclawdd, Sketty and Uplands recently resurfacing main roads and residential streets."
Cllr Stevens said: "It's important to understand we can't repair everything that needs doing in one year. That's why we have a five-year highway management programme in place which guides our crews to the roads scheduled for resurfacing over those five years.
"The public has played a huge part by reporting potholes to the Council. We can't be expected to know where every pothole is in the city and many defects can occur overnight if road surfaces become brittle.
"I'm very pleased with our response to the information the public are giving us and I'm confident we are doing all we can to ensure roads are maintained to the highest level possible."
