Communities celebrate new play areas
Two Swansea communities have been enjoying a special half-term treat thanks to the council's £5m plan to create or upgrade city play areas.
Youngsters are now enjoying new play areas after they were officially opened at Craig Cefn Parc and Weig Fawr in Cockett.
They bring to 25 the number of play areas in the city that have had makeovers with more than 30 to come in the coming months.
Features at Weig Fawr, which was officially opened on Thursday, include two swing units, a pyramid, a slide and an inclusive roundabout.
Craig Cefn Park's new play area includes swings, roundabouts and a junior climbing unit with a slide.
Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council, said the council is committed to upgrading every council-owned play area in the city.
He said: "It's fantastic to see how much children enjoy the opportunity to get out and enjoy fresh air and exercise in these brilliant play areas.
"The new generation of play areas are springing up right across Swansea and in the coming weeks it's anticipated that upgrades will be completed in places like Blackpill and Bracelet Bay as well as Gorseinon, Loughor and Pennard."
Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Business Improvement and Performance, said: "Our parks remained open throughout the pandemic and it was noticeable just how popular and important play areas were for children to get out of the house, enjoy exercise and a breath of fresh air safely.
"We've been inspired by that to dip into the council's £25m Economic Recovery Fund to help create the play areas alongside Welsh Government grants and great support from ward members dipping into their budgets."
Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, added: "The new play area and equipment we're putting in will be a brilliant boost for children looking forward to great free days out."
