New recruits will help you keep beaches and parks clean this summer
ALMOST 30 newly recruited operatives are setting off for our parks and beaches this month to help keep some of Swansea's best-loved scenery clean and tidy for locals and tourists alike.
More than 180 people applied for jobs with the Parks and Cleansing teams back in February to be seasonal staff aiming to help keep our most popular spots spic and span at Easter and into the summer.
The six-month stint runs from now until to September to match the busiest times of the year for residents and visitors.
Cyril Anderson, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said everyone needs to do their bit to leave our parks and beaches at the end of their visit how they'd like others to see it.
He said: "Littering is not only unsightly but it can also be dangerous. Bottles, disposable barbecues and dog mess are what people are concerned about the most because they put others at risk.
"In particular disposable BBQs buried out of sight at the beach retain their heat for many hours and can cause life-changing burns to children and other people who have no idea they're there until they step on them."
Cllr Anderson said: "Across Easter and into the summer our teams will play their part in keeping our busiest parks and beaches clean and tidy. We'll also be increasing the number of cleaning visits to public toilets at tourist spots.
"All we ask is that people treat your facilities and bins with respect. If a litter or dog poo bin is full, take the rubbish home with you."
The successful applicants for the parks and beaches roles are being trained-up and equipped for the months of work ahead of them.
Apart from tackling litter, the summer beach cleansing operatives will also help keep the council's growing network of Changing Places at places like Knab Rock and Rhossili in ship-shape and clear debris like sand and weeds from footpaths and roadsides.
Parks recruits will also be supporting our regular teams completing maintenance at our award-winning parks so that visitors and wildlife alike can enjoy the scenery and the flowers.
