Lots on offer to keep older people active in 2023

There are lots of activities on offer for older people looking to get out of the house, be active and socialise during 2023 thanks to Swansea Council's partnership and involvement team.

They include discounted cinema screenings, group walks that have become particularly popular and weekly get-togethers for tea or coffee, biscuits and a chat.

The team is also planning to run more one-off activities including trips and visits after 135 joined an excursion to the National Museum of History at St Fagans last year while a series of sailings on the Copper Jack along the River Tawe were quickly booked-up.

Around 40 people recently enjoyed a backstage tour of the new Swansea Arena (pictured above).

Plans for this year also include establishing a "Swansea Ageing Well Choir" along with guided cycle sessions and ten-pin bowling.

People age 50 and over can find out about the activities by visiting https://www.swansea.gov.uk/article/10537/50-and-over-in-Swansea or better still by signing-up to the regular newsletter at https://www.swansea.gov.uk/ageingwellemail

Council Cabinet Member for Community Support, Hayley Gwilliam, said: "During the last 12 months we have seen a huge increase in the popularity of events and activities designed for older people here in Swansea with, for example, 500 attending the beach festival last summer.

"Our partnership and involvement team works with other organisations such as Action For Elders, Caredig Housing,  Re-engage and Chinese In Wales, as well as local businesses who have been incredibly supportive, to develop a full programme of events.

"In 2023 we expect this to increase even further and I'd urge anyone who has not signed-up for the newsletter to do so as there are some exciting projects in the pipeline.

"We want older people to be healthy, to be safe inside and outside the home, to enjoy life, to have a voice and make a positive contribution to help improve Swansea."
