Swansea school set for sports upgrade

Work could kick-off in just a few weeks' time on a new full-size all-weather 3G pitch at Olchfa School.

Swansea Council's Cabinet has approved a final funding package for the project that will transform sports facilities for pupils and the wider community.

The council and school governors identified a parcel of land that was surplus to requirements and it was agreed that it would be sold subject to the installation of a new 3G pitch.

Sale of the land was completed earlier this year and a contractor has successfully tendered to build the pitch along with other improvements.

In addition to the new all-weather pitch the school will continue to have grass football and rugby fields.

Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, Robert Smith, said the £1.6m project at Olchfa would be yet another major investment in school sports facilities in Swansea.

"The 3G pitch will ensure that the school's sports teams can play and train all-year around and it will also provide a great asset for the wider community when not in use by the school.

"This is just one of a number of on-going projects that also include an indoor sports barn with indoor pitch currently under construction at Cefn Hengoed Community School and Leisure Centre and an all-weather pitch that is due to open shortly at Pontarddulais Comprehensive School.

"Swansea Council is committed to providing the very best facilities for our schools and we have already help to deliver all-weather pitches at Penyrheol, Morriston, Pentrehafod and Dylan Thomas secondary schools."
