Lower Swansea Valley
Current regeneration work in the area is focused on restoring more heritage features at the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks site and improving links along the River Tawe Corridor to this historical area.
This will help preserve this heritage destination and ensure our rich industrial history continues to be celebrated for years to come while bringing jobs and investment to the local economy.
History of the Lower Swansea Valley
In the 19th Century, Swansea was the world's leading copper ore smelting centre. During this time Swansea was smelting 90% of the UK's total output.
By the end of the last century, all the copperworks had closed and the area became derelict for many decades.
Since the 1960s, the Lower Swansea Valley has been transformed through reclamation, regeneration and new investment. Remaining buildings are being restored and bringing new uses whilst celebrating the heritage features. The development of heritage trails allow visitors to learn more and celebrate the abundant history of this area and the industry that helped shape it.
