Leaving council housing

If you are thinking of ending your occupation contract there are certain things you need to do before you leave.

You must let us know at least 4 weeks before you intend to end your contract. This is called a notice and it must be given to us in writing, specify the date you intend to end and be signed by you.

If you are a joint tenant all tenants need to sign the notice for it to be valid. If only one joint tenant signs the notice it will be treated as notice that the tenant wants to withdraw from the contract.

Rent is payable until the contract ends.

When you leave the property you must:

  1. Remove any possessions belonging to you or anyone living in the property.
  2. Return the property to how it was when you started the contract.
  3. Return any keys for the property. Keys must be returned by midday the day after you want your contract to end.

Not leaving others behind

  • You must not leave anybody living in the property when you move out.

Disposal of any items left behind

  • If you leave any of your possessions in the property, we have the right to dispose of them. You may be charged a minimum of £50 for this disposal.

Repair or replacement

  • You must pay for repair or replacement if damage has been caused deliberately or by your own neglect. You will receive an invoice in relation to such damage (if any) when you end the contract. You will not have to pay for normal wear and tear.

If you have any queries about ending your occupation contract, please contact your local area housing office.
