Inspecting your building work

Once you have given a building notice or submitted full plans you can start work at any time, but you must give us notice of when you reach certain stages of the works. A building control officer will then come and visit the site.

Please contact Swansea Building Control at the following stages for an inspection. Make sure you give us enough notice of the works beginning so we can arrange the inspection. In some cases if you contact us before 9.30am we will visit on the same day where possible.

You should contact us by phoning 01792 635636.

  1. Commencement of the work - please contact us 2 days before the work starts.
  2. Before concreting foundations - please contact us 1 day before.
  3. Before covering the drainage - please contact us 1 day before.
  4. Before covering a damp proof membrane - please contact us 1 day before.
  5. Completion of the works - please contact us once the works have been finished. This should not be more than 5 days after the works have finished.
  6. If the work needs to meet The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 - please contact us 5 days before the building is occupied.

Extra inspections may be carried out where needed or where you have asked for one. This includes cill level, lintel level, wall plate and roof level, fire alarm etc.

Please note

It is your responsibility to contact the Building Control Officer at each stage identified above when the work is ready for inspection. You may either do this yourself or ask your builder or agent to do it.

If you do not provide notice of the above stages you may receive an unlimited fine for each offence, but it is in your best interest to make sure that all inspectors are notified.

If you are employing the services of an electrician not belonging to a self-certifying scheme, it is your responsibility to contact the Building Control Officer at the start of the electrical works.
