Temporary accommodation
If you are unintentionally homeless, in priority need and have a local connection with Swansea, we have a duty to provide temporary accommodation.
In certain cases, we may also have to provide you with temporary accommodation whilst homelessness caseworkers are still assessing your application (to decide if you are homeless, eligible for help and in priority need).
If you are in priority need, you may be provided with temporary accommodation while we look into your case further.
Temporary accommodation could be:
- bed and breakfast
- self-contained independent accommodation
- supported temporary accommodation
It will suitable for your household's needs.
While you are in temporary accommodation, we will stay in close contact with you to offer you support with your housing options, ensure that rent is paid up to date and that you are keeping to the conditions of occupancy.
Rapid re-housing support services for people in temporary accommodation
Rapid re-housing support can help you prepare and find a new home whilst in temporary housing.
When you are living in temporary housing it can be more difficult to keep on top of your benefits, get daily meals, deal with any health needs you have and continue with employment, education and training. Finding and settling into a home can be tough without support to overcome some of these challenges.
A rapid re-housing support worker will contact you in your temporary home to talk about what is important to you for moving into your new home. This may include finding furniture, dealing with changes to your benefits, or registering with a GP. They may also attend viewings and help you contact private landlords, as well as helping you to set up your bills in your new home.
If you are already in temporary housing your homelessness caseworker in Housing Options can refer you to rapid re-housing support.
Permanent accommodation
Our aim is to help you return home or find you somewhere to live, such as:
- council housing
- housing with a housing association
- private rented housing
- supported housing
Our duty to help you will end if you:
- accept an offer of a council tenancy
- accept an offer of a housing association tenancy
- accept an offer of a tenancy in the privately rented sector
- refuse an offer of suitable accommodation
- leave temporary accommodation
- fail to co-operate with your housing plan
However, you have the right to appeal within 21 days if you disagree with the suitability of the accommodation offered to you.
While we assess the suitability of the offer, we may continue to provide you with temporary accommodation.
If you are given a tenancy based on any false or misleading information that you have supplied, we may take legal action to end the tenancy.
