Lifelong Learning - Garment making and needlecraft for beginners

The course covers skills to tackle a range of projects for basic garment making with use of commercial patterns. Learn about fabrics, cutting and sewing techniques.

This is a class where you will work on your own project with guidance from the tutor.

Students will learn skills such as the use of cutting equipment, using a sewing machine and overlocker as well as hand sewing. Learn to embellish garments with handmade decoration and trimmings using a variety of materials and techniques, including up-cycling some of your old tired fabrics.

Students are unable to use their own machines in class and will need to use those provided by Lifelong Learning. The class is facilitated in a workshop style.

Suitable for: Mixed ability from beginners to learners with some experience.

Duration: 10 weeks.

Course fee: £69 full fee / £48 concessionary fee.

What you will need

A list of materials will be available from the tutor at the first class. Approximate cost of sewing equipment initially is £20 eg. cutting scissors; threads; sewing needles and pins plus the cost of materials and patterns when needed as the course progresses.

Students will provide their own materials.

Suggestion: start to collect fabrics that can be recycled, as well as buttons, ribbons and braids from the home or charity shops.
