Broadband solutions

Broadband suppliers across the UK are upgrading their networks to full fibre. Full fibre will give you access to faster and more reliable broadband.

However, building these networks is going to take time but there are other solutions available.

Use the Ofcom broadband availability checker to find out what options you have in your area: Broadband availability (Ofcom) (opens new window)

You may also be eligible for financial support to cover installation costs through Access Broadband Cymru (Welsh Government) (opens new window).

4G / 5G - mobile broadband

4G is the fourth generation of mobile network technology. It's the technology that allows your devices to connect to the internet wirelessly. 5G is the next generation and is currently being rolled out across the UK. 5G operates on higher frequencies and employs advanced technologies to transmit more data at faster speeds. It's expected to bring ultra-fast internet, low latency (minimal delay), and support for a massive number of devices simultaneously.

Use the mobile availability checker provided by Ofcom who regulate the industry to find out what's available in your area.

Mobile availability (Ofcom) (opens new window)

You will need to enter your postcode, then you will be asked to choose your address. Once this information is given, you will be shown what type of mobile services are available. Check both indoor and outdoor coverage for data and enhanced data which will indicate if a mobile internet service is available. It is important to note that the results are predictions and not a guarantee. Actual services available may be different from results and may be affected by network outages.

You will need to speak to your mobile internet service provider to find out if this is a viable solution for you.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)

Fixed wireless access is being deployed by some suppliers in Swansea to provide better broadband in areas where it's not feasible to build a fibre network. This technology offers similar speeds to 4G internet. We recommend you use the Ofcom broadband availability checker to see if this is being offered in your area.

Satellite / Low Earth Orbit (LEO)

LEO technology is the most recent satellite solution. This uses a large amount of smaller satellites that orbit the earth at low altitudes and can offer reliable and faster internet. Many people have installed solutions such as Starlink using the Access Broadband Cymru Scheme. You can find out more about the various packages on the Starlink website.
