Bridges and highway structures

Bridges and highway structures information, including how to report damage.

Swansea Council is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of more than 200 highway bridges, culverts, underpasses, gantries and retaining walls.

Within the county there are also highway structures owned by other organisations such as the Network Rail, British Waterways Board and individual private owners.

All bridges on trunk roads within South Wales are managed by South Wales Trunk Road Agent (opens new window).

We need to:

  • ensure the safety of highway structures
  • manage the routing and movement of abnormal load vehicles within the county
  • approve highway structures proposed by developers
  • design structures and provide structural advice for other council departments.
