What is an AONB?

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a designated landscape, whose distinctive character and natural beauty is so precious that it is to be protected in the national interest.

AONBs are protected and enhanced for nature, people, business and culture.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland have 46 AONBs, and 13 National Parks who have similar aims and purposes.

The National Association for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (NAAONB) supports the UK's 46 AONBs to value and secure the natural beauty of the countryside - Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty - Landscapes for Life (opens new window)
