St Mark's Church, Waunwen, Swansea

Roll of Honour and War Memorial

St Mark's Church, Swansea was an Anglican (Church in Wales) church that, until 2011, served a small parish in the Waunwen area of Swansea. It was built in 1887 and consecrated on 1 December of that year, one of four new Swansea churches to be built around the same period. Built on a much lower budget than the other three, it had wooden pillars and arches rather than the more usual stone arcading.

At the time of the First World War, the parish was characterised by closely-packed terraces and poor-quality housing, although much of it would later be cleared under the various slum-clearance schemes of the twentieth century.

The church was closed in 2011 and subsequently demolished, but before that happened, a photographic survey was undertaken of the interior, which included these images of the roll of honour and war memorial.

The roll of honour was made by William Morris of Rutland Street, Swansea and fixed to the west wall at the back of the church. It was a large oblong sheet of marble and listed the names of the 125 men of the parish who served in the armed forces.

On the north wall was the war memorial, also of marble, which recorded the names of a further 18 men who died in the conflict.
