St. Helens - Swansea Cricket Club blue plaque

In its 142 year history, the ground has witnessed of some of the most exciting and famous cricket matches at regional, national and international level. Swansea also boasts the oldest known cricket club in Wales, dating from 1785. 

Founded in 1873 as the home for Swansea Cricket Club, St Helen's has long captured the imagination of the sport loving public and has played a crucial role in the social and recreational history of the area.  Indeed the former cricketer and now commentator Peter Walker recently described St Helen's as the "spiritual home of Welsh Cricket".

Over the years, St Helen's has witnessed some of Glamorgan Cricket Club's most famous victories. These include:

• Victories over Australia in 1964 and 1968.
• In 1968, Sir Garfield Sobers, playing for Nottinghamshire, became the first player in cricket history to hit six sixes in an over.
• In 1976, Clive Lloyd scored the fastest double-century on record when batting for the West Indians against Glamorgan.
• In 1985, Matthew Maynard, in his debut for Glamorgan scored a century, which included hitting three sixes in succession.  
• St Helen's legacy as an important cricketing ground continues as today it is the venue for South Wales Premier League cricket as played by Swansea Cricket Club. The annual Swansea and West Wales Annual Cricket Festival also sees Glamorgan play at the ground.
• St Helen's is home to the junior section of Swansea Cricket Club: a group of committed and promising young cricketers.
