Around 60 schools to open for children of essential workers

Around 60 schools will open on Monday in Swansea to provide childcare for children of many key workers.

Grab and Go bags will also be available from these hubs for all children and young people in Swansea who are eligible for a free school meal and details will be confirmed at the earliest opportunity.

Provision for vulnerable learners is being considered over the next few days.

In line with Government advice all mainstream schools in Wales are closing by the end of today (Friday).

On Monday, schools in every area of Swansea will open as a hub to provide childcare for children of essential workers (scroll down to see list).

Childcare provision is also being provided at Swansea's two special schools from Monday and at the PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) from Wednesday.

In the first instance, essential workers will be:

  • NHS staff
  • Blue light/emergency services staff
  • Prison workers
  • Social care workers
  • School staff
  • Involved in food production and delivery.

Swansea Council will look to expand these to others identified by the government as capacity increases.

Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart said: "We are following Government advice and are opening as many schools as possible to provide childcare for key workers

"We would encourage key workers to only drop off their children if they have no other option.

"People who are over 70 and friends or family members with underlying health conditions should not be relied on for childcare."

To access this provision both parents/carers or a single parent/carer needs to be an essential worker as listed above.

Initially these hubs will be open for children between 8.00am and 5.00pm as a drop-in facility.

The age provided for will be 3-14 and breakfast, lunch and snacks will be initially provided free of charge for those that need them.

The hubs will cater for pupils from the local community that might not necessarily be on the school roll as long as they meet the essential worker criteria.

Children and young people whose parents are not key workers but are entitled to free school meals will be able to collect 'Grab and Go' bags that will contain a cold healthy packed lunch.

Swansea Council Chief Executive Phil Roberts said: "The situation we face is challenging and dynamic and these plans are in place for the first week.

"Some teaching staff are in vulnerable categories as outlined by the Government while others must stay at home because they have symptoms.

"But where they are fit and well and able to the response from teaching staff has been tremendous and they are only too ready to help support in ensuring that our communities flourish in dealing with this crisis.

"I have nothing but admiration for each one of our headteachers and each member of staff who have kept schools open until now in these difficult times and who are now rising to this fresh challenge.

"At all times we will be reviewing the capacity of this offer to ensure that it remains suitable to meet its objectives.

"We are busy working through our plans for vulnerable learners and these will be in place as soon as possible."

Every child who can be safely cared for at home should be.

As further clarity and details emerge we will communicate with you all via your head teachers and line managers.
