School praised for excellent levels of care, support and guidance

Excellent levels of care, support and guidance at Pentrehafod School means many pupils make strong progress and develop as ambitious and capable learners, school inspectors have found.

A team from Estyn visited the comprehensive in Swansea and have just published their findings.

The report states: "Leaders' vision of developing an ambitious school has led to an ethos of collaboration among staff who are committed to working together to improve the quality of provision for the benefit of pupils.

"Teachers know their pupils well and promote positive behaviours effectively.

"This helps to develop a strong working relationship with pupils and ensure that pupils are focused and engage well in their learning.

"Staff in the school's specialist teaching facility make a notable impact on the progress of pupils in their care."

Inspectors rated care, support and guidance at the school as excellent and judged Pentrehafod to be good in all other inspection areas.

They added: "The school works effectively with a wide range of partners to enhance its provision, to enrich curricular experience for pupils and to support the most vulnerable."

The report praised the extensive careers support and guidance to pupils and said it works effectively with a wide range of partners to ensure that careers advice is bespoke to each individual pupil's needs. It said Pentrehafod works particularly imaginatively with local and international businesses.

Inspectors said Headteacher Jennifer Ford and the leadership team have created a culture of professional learning in which all staff feel valued for their contribution to pupils' outcome and wellbeing.

Mrs Ford said: "The school is very proud of this Estyn report. Staff, both teaching and non-teaching, have worked very hard to provide opportunities for our young people and we are so pleased that the schools' achievements are recognised.

"We are fortunate to have a strong Governing Body, who both support and challenge us, and very supportive parents and carers.

"The inspection area 'Care, Support and Guidance' received the highest judgement of 'Excellent', and this reflects the excellent care our young people receive.

"We are now keen to work on the report's recommendations, ensuring Pentrehafod goes from strength to strength.

" I would like to say a big thank you to the parents and carers who supported the school through the Estyn questionnaire and  who attended the parents and carers' meeting."

Cllr Jennifer Raynor, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills, said: "I was really pleased to read this report which had many examples of the excellent work taking place at Pentrehafod.

"I would like to congratulate all those associated with the school."
