High Street car park set for new lift as part of £250,000 upgrade

SWANSEA'S High Street multi-storey car park is set to get a new lift this summer as part of a £250,000 revitalisation of the site.

Swansea Council has already invested in a facelift for the car park including updated CCTV equipment, a deep clean, fresh paintwork, door replacements and improved signage for disabled parking spaces.

This week work starts on fitting seven new state-of-the-art parking payment machines at the car park to replace ones that have reached the end of their useful life. And in the summer a new lift will be installed.

Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: "As part of the overall re-vamp of the High Street area that includes significant private sector investment, we want to encourage more people to use the car park.

"The investment in an improved look and feel, upgraded CCTV and new payment machines and a new lift are all things that people have asked us to do. Our cleansing team are on-site regularly keeping things tidy and the new investment should make it a safer and more inviting place to use.

He said: "There will be new state-of-the art parking payment machine on every floor that will be reliable and easy to use. They'll take coin, card and contactless payments. Drivers who forget to pay at a pay station will be able to pay contactless when they exit.

"This will be a new way of using the car park, as it will use Number Plate Recognition cameras to enter and exit. On completion of the works, members of our car parks team will be on hand to provide assistance with the new machinery."

The car park's new lift is on order and is expected to be delivered by the summer. This is due to the fact that the equipment has to be specially made.

Cllr Thomas said: "The total investment in improvements to the car park will be about £250,000 which I'm sure will be welcomed by current users.

"At a time when private sector investment in the High Street is rising, the Palace Theatre is set to be refurbished and other improvements are planned for the area in the coming months and years, it's good to see these changes to the car park going ahead."
