Kev Johns MBE, who is well-known throughout the city and beyond for his community work as well as presenting a daily breakfast radio show, topped a public vote celebrating all things great about the city.

He was presented with his accolade on stage at the Grand Theatre where he was starring as the panto dame for the 21st consecutive year.

Swansea-born Kev who is also an actor and a chaplain beat the likes of Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones, poet Dylan Thomas and renowned landmarks including Rhossili Bay to be named the city's 50th anniversary icon.

Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council, said: "Kev Johns really is Mr Swansea. He sums up everything that is great about our city.

"Every day he is out there helping local communities whether it is through his daily radio show, being a chaplain in our local communities, supporting local charities or taking to the stage as a well-loved panto dame.

"Everyone in Swansea knows of Kev Johns because he goes out of his way to help people and our city.

"Swansea is known on the world stage for its actors, singers, sports stars and amazing beauty spots like Gower, but in our 50th year it is great that people have voted to honour a true community hero."

Kev is probably best-known for presenting the breakfast show on Swansea Sound for many years and is one of Wales' most sought after comperes and after dinner speakers. He continues to entertain Swansea City fans during half time at the Liberty Stadium.

Kev is appearing alongside Coronation Street star Tristan Gemill, who is playing Captain Hook in this year's Grand Theatre pantomime 'Peter Pan' which runs until 12 January.
