Drop-in event to showcase comprehensive investment plans

PEOPLE can find out more about plans to dramatically improve facilities at a comprehensive school in Swansea at two community information events.

Bishopston is the latest secondary school in Swansea in line for a make-over that will see the refurbishment and remodelling of existing buildings to provide modern classrooms for pupils and teaching staff.

Work will also include a new two storey extension to replace the demountables which are no longer fit for purpose.

The scheme will be jointly funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government as part of a £149.7m investment in school facilities in Swansea under the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme.

Parents and the wider community can view the plans and give their views on the proposed work at two drop-in events this month.

The first takes place between 4.30pm and 6.30pm at the school on Wednesday November 13 and the second between 10am and noon in Bishopston Sports Centre on Tuesday November 19.

If all goes to plan and subject to final Welsh Government approval contractors would move on site next autumn.

Work would be done in phases with an aim to complete the project by Spring 2022.

Jennifer Raynor, Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills said: "This major investment will address the current condition of the school buildings and provide modern, flexible teaching facilities to create distinct faculty areas to meet the changing demands of the curriculum.

"A lot of hard work has already gone on behind the scenes with our education department working closely with the headteacher and governing body.

"Pupils, parents and staff at Bishopston can look forward to an exciting future for the school and will be able to find out more by attending either of the drop-in sessions."
