The centre's fitness suite and reception areas are being transformed by Freedom Leisure, the trust running the facility for Swansea Council. A Costa Coffee service is being introduced.

The work, which forms part of a £5.1m council investment in leisure facilities across the city, will also include major improvements to the plant and equipment that helps keep Penlan's pool a high-quality facility for swimmers.

This will help make the pool operate at a high standard for many years to come, offering energy savings and improved service.

Nic Beggs, area manager for Freedom Leisure, said: "This important work will see the pool temporarily close to the public from August 16-23; other pools such as those at the LC, Penyrheol and Morriston leisure centres - and the Wales National Pool - remain open as usual.

He said that while the pool will be closed, the rest of the facilities at Penlan will be open.

He added: "We've been contacting all our members, regular users, resident clubs and those who have pre-booked sessions to let them know about this - and we thank all pool users for their understanding.

"We plan to re-open the pool on August 24 - and will provide up-to-date information on the centre's website and social media channel. Queries can also be made by phone - 01792 588079. During this time, the Penlan centre's other facilities all remain available to the public.

The city-wide overhaul programme that is improving leisure locally will benefit tens of thousands of customers.

Investments include a full upgrade of gym facilities at the LC and a modern re-working of the food and drink offering there. Other centres benefiting include those at Bishopston, Morriston and Penyrheol.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council's cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: "We made a £5.1m capital improvements commitment to our leisure centre customers and now we're delivering on that. The work has started and will continue over the coming year."
