The overall pass rate of 97.9% (97.6% 2018) is above the Welsh average with an amazing 28.4% being the top A*-A grades.

Nearly 600 young people from Swansea schools sat the examinations with many now preparing to go on to university or other education and training.

In all, 28.4% (26.0% in 2018) of Swansea entrants gained an A* or A grade compared to 27.0% for all Wales.  The overall pass rate of 97.9% in Swansea is better than the 97.6% for Wales.  Overall 79.6% of grades were C or better in Swansea, compared to 76.3% for Wales.

Cllr Jennifer Raynor, Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills, said: "I'm delighted that it has been another great set of achievements by young people in Swansea and I'd like to congratulate them, their parents and of course recognise their schools and teachers for all their hard work.

"I'd like to wish our pupils well for the future whatever that brings.

"Education is a top priority for Swansea Council and we have made and will continue to make significant investment in supporting our schools to raise attainment and give all young people in Swansea the best possible opportunities to reach their full potential."

Maths is the most popular subject and is recognised as one of the toughest of the A-Level exams, but in Swansea no fewer than 46.7% of the 150 entries got the top grades of A* or A with 76.7% attaining a C grade or above.  These are incredible results.

Further mathematics had a 96% pass rate with 86.4% attaining trades A*-C and 45.5% with the top A*-A grades.

Swansea's seven schools with sixth forms made 1158 entries for A level with the WJEC this year in 39 different subjects.

In 25 subjects, there was a pass rate (Grades A*-E) of 100% while in 12 different subjects, a third or more of all entries attained top grades A* and A.

There were 24 subjects where 75% or more attained grades A*-C, with 9 of these subjects having 90% or more with these grades.

In the three separate science subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, over a third of entries gained A* and A grades.

In Welsh First Language a third of entrants gained A* and A grades whilst 86.7% achieved a grade C or higher.

History was also popular with 97 entries and no fewer than 95.9% with grades A* to C.

Swansea results quoted refer only to WJEC examinations used by Swansea schools, and do not include results for other awarding bodies nor for Gower College Swansea.
