Global art hero adds colour to Swansea competition

Art icon Sir Peter Blake is to be put in the frame by artists of all abilities across Swansea.

Residents who enjoy trying their hand at painting are invited to create a competition portrait of the pop art legend.

All entries will be judged by 86-year-old Sir Peter, best known for creating the world-famous album design for The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The competition is being held by the 9 to 90 Creative Community, led by GS Artists and the Fusion Programme with support from local partners Elysium Gallery, Coastal Housing and Volcano Theatre.

Swansea Council cultural services officer Amina Abu-Shahba, of community and cultural partnership project Fusion, said: "I urge all budding artists around Swansea to seize this opportunity to get close to greatness!

"The Paint a Portrait of Sir Peter Blake competition will be judged by the man himself so he'll consider every entry.

"We're delighted that Sir Peter has agreed to work with us. He's a great supporter of Swansea's own legend Dylan Thomas - and a big supporter of the city's art scene."

The competition winner will receive a unique art hamper, including artists' materials.

Entries should be submitted by email to by November 18.

The portrait competition is part of a 9 to 90 initiative that reaches out to all local community artists.

The Alternative Christmas Exhibition will be staged in several High Street venues and will be opened by Peter Blake on Saturday, December 8.

Jane Simpson, of GS Artists, said: "The exhibition will be an unpretentious celebration of paintings, drawings, photos, crafts and creations. Any age, style and theme are welcome, with up to three pieces per submission.

"It is open to all of Swansea's unsung and unseen artists and creators so I urge local people to submit their work."

9 to 90 are also looking for cake makers to join a creative bake-off and choirs to fill the High Street to boost an alternative Christmas fair in High Street on December 8.
