Sprinkler installation at high rise blocks in Swansea

Work to install sprinkler systems in high rise buildings is continuing in Swansea.

Fire Sprinkler

Swansea Council launched a £1.5m programme earlier in the year to ensure all of its high-rise flats were fitted with the equipment and provide reassurance for council tenants living in the flats.

The move comes in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire which resulted in the death of 72 people.

The Council owns a total of 11 high rise tower blocks and has recently finished installing sprinklers at Jeffrey's Court in Penlan.

Work is now underway at the two blocks at Matthew Street in Dyfatty. Once completed, the installation teams will move on to Clyne Court in Sketty.

Andrea Lewis, Cabinet Member for Homes and Energy, said: "Since the Grenfell Tower tragedy, our housing teams have been working hard to reassure tenants of the high standards of fire safety we have in place at our high rise properties.

"This will now be boosted even further by installing sprinkler systems to provide additional fire precaution measures."

Industry experts have been monitoring the progress of the installation at Jeffrey's Court and have also commented on the high standard of work being done.

Residents have also been praised for their cooperation during the installation process.

Cllr Lewis added: "We are very pleased with the comments made about the work completed so far. I would also like to thank residents for their cooperation during the process as it can mean some disruption for tenants while the installation is completed. I'm satisfied we have completed work so far with minimal disruption."

The sprinkler installation also follows on from tests and reassurances to residents about cladding used on high rise blocks in the city.

Cladding was found to be the main cause of the fire in Grenfell Tower but the Council has been quick to reassure residents in Swansea that where cladding is featured - that it is safe and not the same kind used at Grenfell Tower.

Cllr Lewis said: "We recognised early on that our tenants would be concerned about their home and we were quick to commission tests which proved our cladding was safe.

Other high rise blocks included in the sprinkler installation programme include Croft Street & Griffith John Street - Dyfatty and Rheidol Court in Clase.
