Scores of things to do to keep family busy over the holidays

Youngsters who've just started their summer holidays will have a grand array of things to keep them busy over the long break from school.

Blackpill Lido

Schools have officially broken up for the summer and Swansea Council has laid on more than 200 events and experiences to keep families occupied.

It all starts this coming weekend with the White Lady Festival at Oystermouth Castle and continues on to the end of August with the Festival of Stitch.

The Land Train will be full steam ahead every day on the prom with destinations including the fabulous Blackpill Lido among the stopping-off points.

Plantasia's summer offering is its Into the Wild Animal Encounters from July 31 to August 4, for which booking is essential.

The Reluctant Dragon is putting in a visit to Oystermouth Castle on August 9 as part of the venue's outdoor theatre season in association with Panini's. The recent Shakespeare production of A Midsummer Night's Dream attracted a record audience and organisers are hoping the children's comedy will go even better.

Robert Francis Davies, Cabinet Member for Innovation, Regeneration and Tourism, said: "The summer holidays are the peak visiting time for hundreds of thousands of people from across the UK and abroad.

"We've got some of the finest seaside and country in the world right here on our doorstep and the council has been pulling out all the stops to show we are the perfect stage for a summer to remember."

Swansea's Festival of Stitch between August 10 and August 24 is being staged at a range of venues around the city including Swansea Museum, the Grand Theatre and the Dragon Hotel.

Apart from headline events, there's also free swimming for local children at Active Swansea leisure centres and lots of things on offer from council libraries, the Glynn Vivian art gallery and the Dylan Thomas Centre to keep the family occupied.
