Musician Christian strikes a chord or two at his home-town school

A Swansea musician who has worked with Lady Gaga, Bobby Brown and Gladys Knight has been passing on some tips to pupils at his former school - all the way from his home in America.

Christian Jones

Christian Jones who grew up in Birchgrove is now one of the music world's go to session guitarists.

After leaving Birchgrove Comprehensive and then Neath College he studied at the Guitar Institute in London before making his way to Los Angeles.

Now based in Atlanta he still keeps in touch with Chris Jones, his old music teacher at Birchgrove, and recently took part in a masterclass with some of the pupils at the school via Skype.

As well as listening to the young musicians play and offering some expert tips Chris also passed on some advice about how to make it in the music industry.

Mr Jones, who is now head of music at Birchgrove Comprehensive, said: "Christian was a year 10 pupil when I joined Birchgrove Comp in the early 90's and he came from a family of guitarists. His dad and older brothers all played locally and lived and breathed guitar. His dad even built a home studio in their garden.

"I remember Christian and his school friends playing Queen covers in school amongst many other songs and I recall as a young teacher the passion of the boys and the desire to become great musicians.

"Christian's ambition was to attend the Guitar Institute in Los Angeles and he eventually moved there and supported himself by playing gigs.

"He is such a great role model for our pupils because he's risen to the top through sheer hard work and persistence

"Since he left Birchgrove I've kept in touch with Christian and his dad.

"Christian has given me advice on the best guitars to buy and I enjoy seeing his colourful musical life coming up on my Facebook news feeds.

"He was happy to help our Birchgrove guitar pupils and I'm grateful he was prepared to share his wisdom and career path with our young musicians."
