Following a visit in December, Bishopston Comprehensive has received the rare accolade of being judged as "excellent" in all five inspection areas.

The team from Estyn were so impressed by what they saw they have now asked the school to share its work with others in Wales so they can learn from Bishopston's successes.

The report, published on Thursday, states: "Leaders at Bishopston have established an ethos whereby pupils develop outstanding social, learning and life skills. Learning experiences meet the needs of pupils exceptionally well and teaching supports pupils to reach high standards. Overall, the quality of teaching is excellent."

The report highlights the consistently good GCSE results achieved by girls and boys and says pupils of all abilities outperform many of their counterparts in comparable schools in Wales.

It also found: "The school is highly successful in maintaining a caring and inclusive ethos. The school makes a strong contribution to pupils' wellbeing and the progress they make in their learning and personal development. A culture of high expectations and respect for others pervades all of the school's work."

Headteacher Jeff Bird and his leadership team, along with the school's governing body, are praised for successfully creating a strong sense of community and a strong culture of continuous improvement.

The report adds: "This has had a sustained impact on the high-quality provision, the outstanding standards pupils achieve and their exceptional levels of wellbeing."

Mr Bird said: "The findings of the report are a true testament to the hard work and commitment of the whole Bishopston community, particularly the pupils and all of our staff who teach and support them. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to parents, governors, our excellent cluster primary schools and all other partners for their exceptional support in helping us to achieve these outstanding results."

Chair of Governors, Professor Jon Roper said: "We are delighted with this excellent report.  It is the product of many years hard work and all those who have contributed to the school's outstanding success are to be congratulated.  Bishopston Comprehensive continues to live up to its ambition to be an outstanding learning community founded upon mutual respect."

Cllr Jennifer Raynor, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning, said: "Everyone connected to Bishopston Comprehensive should be very proud of this report. To be rated excellent in all inspection areas is a real achievement. Bishopston is the first comprehensive in Wales to receive excellent judgements in all inspection areas, under the new inspection arrangements that started in September 2017."
